Barton

Erected in 1740, the obelisk marks the site of the Battle of Barnet – a key event in the long-running War of the Roses. It was the meeting place of 15000 Lancastrians led by King Maker, Richard Nevil, Earl of Warwick…

against the Yorkist forces of his cousin, Edward, son of the Duke of York, whom Warwick had placed on the throne ten years before – though ruling himself for the first three.

Warwick – last of the Barons – was immensely rich with twice as much land as any subject before him. An estrangement with his protege led him to invade England on behalf of Margaret of Anjou, whose husband Henry V1 languished in the Tower.

On Easter Sunday, attacked under cover of thick fog, the Yorkists were forced back into the town. They counter-attacked and the troops up at Hadley Green soon fell into disarray. All was over before noon, with 1500 men perishing.

Unable to find his horse, caught in the woods near the site of the obelisk and weighed down by armour, Warwick – ‘The most courageous and manliest knight living’ – was slain on the spot.
